So Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is going to play in competition at Cannes, after all. Less than a year ago I called bullshit on that possibility, and now here it is. Anyone got a copy of Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe lying around? I might need to take some pointers from that soon.
Anyway, until today we still hadn’t seen but a tiny smidgen of imagery showing Mélanie Laurent as Shosanna, the girl who is truly the protagonist of Basterds. Yeah, Brad Pitt’s Lieutanant Aldo Raine is painted as the lead, but that’s beause he’s Brad Pitt, and that’s how you sell the movie.
Thanks to Vanity Fair, we’ve now got a good look at Shoshanna. The mag has a small photo spread which, among a couple images of Pitt mugging as Raine and Diane Kruger looking good in character as Bridget von Hammersmark, there’s a good image of Laurent in character and a full cast sitdown with all the majors arrayed around Tarantino.
Check the site for full-size images, and be ready to hear reports of confusion coming out of Cannes when the war movie + black and white art house flick premieres there.
