Things are rough out there. Everything’s looking pretty grim for everybody, and it’s easy to stop thinking about long term problems and just focus on the shitstorm we find ourselves in today. But that’s the kind of thinking that got us into this shitstorm, so while we try to keep our entire economy from turning into a barter and BJ based one, we have to keep an eye on tomorrow.
And tomorrow contains untold environmental devastation. We’ve not been treating this planet right, and the last few years have begun showing us the impact we’ve made. Like a drunk waking up and pissing blood, we’re feeling the effects.
So it’s important to do something to heal this planet – even something small. In the grand scheme of things, Disney’s new promotion – to plant a tree for everyone who goes to see their new movie, Earth, during the opening week – is a small step, but it’s a step nonetheless, and it’s one you can undertake while maybe seeing a cool movie. Earth comes from the same people who made the astonishing TV series Planet Earth, and it promises to capture more of that magic. Here’s the full press release:
Disneynature, the first new film label to be introduced by Disney in 60 years, will celebrate its premiere film, “EARTH,” being released nationally on April 22, Earth Day, by planting a tree in honor of every moviegoer who sees the film in its opening week.
“’EARTH’ is a spectacular film from the world’s most acclaimed nature filmmakers, and we couldn’t think of a better way to launch the new Disneynature banner, and to celebrate the spirit of the film and Earth Day at the same time,” said Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “The film gives moviegoers an entertaining and unprecedented view of our planet, with some of the most astonishing imagery and exciting natural drama ever presented on the big screen.”
Jean-François Camilleri, executive vice president and general manger of Disneynature, said: “The public is looking for films like ‘EARTH’ that are entertaining, educational, show nature’s beauty and are environmentally conscious. What better way to celebrate the opening of this epic film than by planting trees on behalf of our moviegoers!”
Disney’s goal is to ensure that it plants trees in areas that conservationists have identified as important hot spots of biodiversity. Disney will oversee the planting of the trees in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, which is considered the most endangered rain forest in the world. Today, only 7 percent of the Atlantic Forest remains. Disney is committed to ensuring the trees are planted and cared for to provide the greatest long term benefit for the planet.
Narrated by James Earl Jones, “EARTH” tells the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journeys across the planet we call home. “EARTH” combines rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations by capturing the most intimate moments of our planet’s wildest and most elusive creatures. Directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, the acclaimed creative team behind the Emmy Award®-winning “Planet Earth,” combine forces again to bring this epic adventure to the big screen.
Tickets are now on sale for opening weekend. Tickets are available through the film’s website at www.disney.com/earth and via phone at 1-888-DISNEY6.
