When Bioware announced Star Wars: The Old Republic as its first attempt at a massively multiplayer experience, a palpable sense of restrained anticipation – and possibly even a little dread – washed over fans of the developer’s terrific games. After all, the stench of Star Wars: Galaxies‘ failure stew still lingers as a warning to any who would attempt a Star Wars MMORPG.
Hundreds-of-hours-long story lines for each class? That’s one mighty claim. It’s still far, far too early to get excited about the promises in this video, but Bioware’s track record, including the fundamentally wounded but underrated KOTOR II, has yet to produce a real disappointment. This one might get a lot of people who were never sold on World of Warcraft to take the MMO plunge.
