THE WEEK OF MARCH 10th, 2009

ROLE MODELS

Special Features:

  • Deleted scenes & alternate takes
  • Bloopers
  • In character & off script
  • On the set of Role Models
  • Feature commentary with director David Wain

Role Models
was a funny movie. Reuniting a ton of The State
alumn behind David Wain’s direction, we get a movie that breaks out of
the Apatow R-Rated comedy mold. Though, I’ve been appreciating the Jody
Hill R-Rated comedy mold, it’s nice to another kind of mold about
foul-mouthed adults befouling children. Good times are had at the
expense of energy drinks, LARPing and a young black child’s obsession
with breasts. You will believe that Seann William Scott can be
entertaining again.

MILK

Special Features:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Featurettes

Milk wants
to say a lot. Hell, some people have been tricked into thinking that
this middle of the road biopic actually honors Harvey Milk. Well, I
hate to break some news to you. Beatification doesn’t pass for the
truth. If you want to see a portrayal of a man turned into a Christ
like figure for a cultural subset, then this is the flick for you. If
you want to see a portrait of a man who piggy-backed on the
accomplishments of others and even helped the Peoples’ Temple rise to
power in San Francisco, then look elsewhere. This film isn’t concerned
with the man, but the idea of what he became.

SOUTH PARK: THE COMPLETE TWELFTH SEASON

Special Features:

  • Six Days to South Park: A day-by-day making of South Park (Super Fun Time)
  • Six Days to South Park: The Sixth Day (About Last Night)
  • The Making of ‘Major Boobage’

South Park: The Complete Twelfth Season
suffers
from what South Park has been plagued with since around Season 9. They
can start strong in the first half of their yearly broadcast, but they
fucking collapse around the fall episodes. Major Boobage and Over-Logging
were fun episodes that pushed the limited animation to new means and
actually stayed on the topic they were focusing on. Then, there’s shit
like guinea pigs attacking America and a rather lazy rip on Twilight fans.
I’m not sure why Parker and Stone collapse so horribly in the later
months, but it’s enough of a concern that it should be addressed. If
you manage to pick this up on Blu-Ray, be prepared to be overwhelmed.
The transfer isn’t bad, it just looks like a really clean PAL to NTSC
conversion.

HOWARD THE DUCK IS HERE!*

*On
Thursday, there will be a Special Edition column dedicated to this
film. It’ll be the most that anyone has spoken of Willard Huyck since
1984.
