The Oscar telecast last night tried a few new things with formatting, but they’ve still got one thing wrong: all the damn trailers were at the end of the show instead of before. I almost tuned out before this clip montage ran and I’m glad I didn’t, because it has tasty first look footage from Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, Woody Allen’s Whatever Works and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. Add new stuff from Terminator: Salvation, 500 Days of Summer and the ‘floating heads’ version of a State of Play montage, and things were pretty good. I could do with more of those and less of Fame and no Beck covering Bob Dylan at all, but who cares?
OK, maybe it’s not the best bit (that’s Judd Apatow making fun of The Reader and Janusz Kaminski saying ‘suck on that, Anthony Dod Mantle’) but the Public Enemies footage is pretty damn good.
