2010 is going to be a year of great events, but here are a few of the more notables ones:
– The longest lasting solar eclipse of the 21st century will occur.
– President Obama will deliver his first State of the Union address.
– The new Masters of the Universe movie is scheduled to be released.
Obviously, the release of a new live action He-Man film is far and away the greater of those, and now that the project finally has its director, it’s time to rock n’ roll on Eternia.
John Stevenson, who first sat in the Big Chair by co-directing the successful Kung-Fu Panda, has been signed by producer Joel Silver to helm the newest take on the classic comic, toy line and cartoon made popular by Filmation in the 80’s. Mattel, who owns the rights to the characters, has been trying to get another live action film off the ground since 1987’s Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella, landed with a resounding ‘thud’.
It is being referred to as a reimagining, but what isn’t these days? If ever a word has been thrown about way too much lately, it’s that. Now you can reimagine anything: a novel, a song, a sandwich.
Anyway, Stevenson apparently has high hopes of this becoming a massive studio film, which is by no means a bad thing. One of the reasons the 1987 version was awful, aside from an ass script, shitty acting and Courteney Cox, was the $14 budget. If Warner Bros., the studio set to release this, grants them a huge budget then that can only mean excellent things for Mr. He-Man.
The next bit of info should be casting related, as there’s been a script around since 2007 by Justin Marks, but it’s almost certain to be re-written as actors get added and the production team fills out more.
