Castro: Does It Matter?
So Fidel Castro is stepping down. People all over are saying that Cuba
will become more Democratic. Cuban baseball players who defected are
talking about how they can return to the Motherland without the same
fears.
Bullshit.
To think that Fidel Castro is going to let his nation, and it pretty
much is his nation, suddenly become anything even close to being looser
and freer, is madness. His way has been the way for so long that the architecture and continuity will be in place for one of many of his sycophants to carry the torch. I think this was a preventative decision, to make him look magnanimous. His health is going to fuck him, and to have medical reasons take him out of the game is a sign of weakness. This is a case where he had his Cuban sandwich and ate it too.
Cuba isn’t going to change. Not for decades. Not in sweeping patterns but gentle nudges. And who is to say if the change will make it more moderate? Younger brothers tend to feel the need to outdo their predecessor, not negate them. If Fidel’s brother is indeed the next in line no one really knows what’s going to happen when the scepter is actually in his hand.
That wasn’t literal. I know that Cuba is not a Sceptertarian regime.
It’s definitely news that Fidel is leaving. It just isn’t GOOD news. Not yet.
