Well technically, we’re currently on Jack Ryan reboot #3, but give it another decade or so and I’m sure we’ll get there. The Hollywood Reporter did a piece today announcing that Paramount has scooped up writer Hossein Amini for the next Jack Ryan film. The upcoming project remains untitled, although another origin story would probably be the smart money, especially if they want to turn this into a (finally) stable franchise with the same actor for at least three pictures. Various scuttlebutt earlier this year was for a Ryan Gosling version, and later for Sam Raimi to come onboard for a multi-installment run.
Amini’s known for adapting Elmore Leonard, Henry James and Thomas Hardy, and his credits include Shekhar Kapur’s The Four Feathers, Leonard’s Killshot with Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Thomas Jane and Rosario Dawson; and Mikael Hofstrom’s upcoming Shanghai with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, John Cusack, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li and Ken Watanabe. He’s also got the Golden Compass sequel, The Sublte Knife on his plate.
At this point I’m lukewarm to the prospect. Undoubtedly they’ll head down the Bourne / Casino Royale route. And while it could be good, I’m still awaiting that Liev Schreiber John Clark flick more.
