What will James Cameron do after Avatar? Will he wait another decade to make a movie or will he get right back up on the horse? IESB is hearing that he wants to get working on another film, one with which you’re already familiar: the remake of Forbidden Planet.
The film has been kicking around for a while, with the most recent movement in the past few months as J. Michael Straczynski has been working on a script. JMS says that his version isn’t exactly a remake, a reimagining or a prequel… which I guess leaves a sequel? There are only so many ways you can be derivative of an old movie.
This isn’t Cameron’s first time expressing interest in the property; he talked about remaking it last century, after Titanic. You can see why he would be interested: the original is a groundbreaking science fiction film, and he’s all about breaking ground these days. Hell, maybe he could use his fancy motion capture stuff to have Leslie Nielsen in the new film, once again playing a young man.
Forbidden Planet is, of course, loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Just for those of you puzzling over the headline.
