REVIEW:

Some are superheroes, while others are just regular individuals who feel driven to defend those they care about when danger threatens. Some people are successful, while others are not. Some people become wicked. The tale revolves around parents and children who will go to any lengths to protect the people they care about.

Raising Dion elevates the traditional origin tale of a superhero to a whole new level. Mark Warren (Michael B. Jordan), Dion’s father, gave him his abilities, but they don’t emerge until after his father, a fireman, dies in an accident.

Mark was lonely while he was alive due to his supernatural abilities. Growing Dion becomes the tale of Dion’s mother doing her best to prevent her son from the same destiny. Because Nicole has a superhero’s heart, the program can connect with its target audience.

Since Mark kept his abilities a secret from almost everyone, Dion and Nicole will have to find out how to train him on their own once they discover what’s going on with him. They locate mentors and handlers to assist Dion in acquiring control, while also investigating Mark’s secret life and death and evading different entities interested in Dion’s abilities for their own purposes.

They turn to comic books for advice as they try to figure out who is a friend, an adversary, and who can be trusted with the truth in their new, complex lives. Everything underneath them is constantly changing as superpowered creatures use the elements against them, and individuals switch sides at a moment’s notice.

Nicole and Dion have relocated to a new area because she just became a widow, and Nicole also finds work. At the start of the season, Dion is like any other youngster: he’s concerned about spilling his cereal, playing with the newest gadgets, and making new friends at school. When he’s anxious, as when he spills something or wants to show off for youngsters he wants to impress, his abilities begin to manifest.

Nicole and Dion are still dealing with the loss of Mark. He was killed in the line of duty, but he was on a strange assignment that took him out of town, so there are still unresolved issues. When Nicole discovers a few hints among Mark’s belongings, she can’t help but follow them in the hopes of finding some resolution.

Pat Rollins (Jason Ritter), Mark’s closest friend and colleague at BIONA, who shares Dion’s passion for comic books and tries to assist Nicole as much as possible with Dion, has stayed friends with Nicole and Dion. Also, Nicole seeks help from her physician sister, Kat Reese (Jazmyn Simon), who has to be persuaded that Nicole isn’t insane.

Esperanza Jimenez (Sammi Haney), a girl with brittle bones who is extremely patient with Dion, and Jonathan King (Gavin Munn), the leader of the guys Dion want to impress but who bullies him, are two of the youngsters Dion ultimately interacts with at school. Mark and Pat’s superior at BIONA, a scientist named Suzanne Wu (Ali Ahn), is sympathetic to their plight and hopes to learn something new from Dion in return. As Charlotte Tuck, played by Deirdre Lovejoy, Nicole works with her to unravel some of Mark’s riddles after she is rescued.

This is only the beginning of the list of minor characters. That makes it seem as though there are many characters to keep track of, but there aren’t. Like any good comic book program, Raising Dion features a large cast of interesting characters, from the young kids to the office employees, who are all wonderfully written and performed. The cast as a whole is outstanding, with several standout performances.

It almost goes without saying that Ja’Siah Young, Alisha Wainwright, Michael B Jordan, and Jason Ritter are excellent. Season 2 should include more of what I desire. Sammi Haney is the season’s unsung hero. Ali Ahn transformed Suzanne Wu into a professional, yet she could be anything- a villain, a buddy, or superhero.
