Sigourney Weaver is a fount of story ideas today. First she offers the idea of her Ghostbusters II son Oscar joining the boys in the planned Ghostbusters 3, and now she’s dropping ideas on how to revitalize the Alien franchise.
Weaver says that she has talked with Ridley Scott about coming back and doing a fifth film in the series, but that they’re both concerned that CGI has utterly devalued the Xenomorph. Their solution? Get rid of the alien.
“What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives,” Weaver told MTV.
That’s… kind of interesting. Why tie Ripley to just one sort of alien? This universe seems to be a big one beyond the stuff that we’ve seen, so how about we see some of it? Of course there are a lot of pitfalls, not the least of which is the question ‘Do we care about Ripley or do we care about the Xenomorph?’ but let’s answer that after a story gets hashed out.
Of course, this is just another project that Scott is playing with in an attempt to pretend he’s not in his twilight years. Unless he hands this off, I say we never, ever see it happen.
