The Time: Thursdays, 9:00 PM, The CW
The Show:
Sam
and Dean Winchester are two brothers who roam the back roads of America
in a 1967 Chevy Impala hunting evil. At first they fought all
of the usual: vampires, ghosts, werewolves and the like, but in recent
yeas they’ve found themselves more and more dealing with the literal
forces of Hell as a demon war has been brewing for decades, with their
family caught in the middle. Sam has been pre-ordained from
birth by a past foe, the yellow-eyed demon, Azazel, to be a pivotal
figure in the war…on the demon side. Meanwhile, Dean has
recently been resurrected from Hell by angels because they have the Lord’s work
for him to do.
The Stars:
• Jared Padalecki – Sam Winchester
• Jensen Ackles – Dean Winchester
The Episode: “I Know What You Did Last Summer”
In this first of a two-part story, the demon Ruby (Genevieve Cortese) informs Sam and Dean that a girl named Anna (Julie McNiven) is able to hear the conversations of angels, and that a new and powerful demon, Alastair (Mark Rolston) is very interested in finding her. When Alastair attacks and Ruby takes off with Anna, Dean lambastes Sam for trusting her. Sam is then forced to tell Dean how he spent the summer while Dean was trapped in Hell and how Ruby saved his life. Meanwhile, the angels Castiel (Misha Collins) and Uriel (Robert Wisdom) show up and demand to be taken to Anna, but not for the reason that Dean thinks.
The Lowdown:
There’s only one episode after this one until the December dead zone is upon us and I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle it. Supernatural is getting achingly good. Like Angel or Buffy or X-Files in their prime good. In this episode, we get introduced to Alastair, who’s a badass, find out how Sam and Ruby cemented their alliance and are introduced to Anna.
When I say Alastair’s a badass, I mean just that. He coughs away Sam’s best attempt to mentally exorcise him and laughs off the demon-killing Bowie knife that the Winchesters carry – both of which things that the demon Lilith (the one who put Dean in Hell) is afraid of. He also has a great line when beating the tar out of Dean, “Don’t you recognize me, Dean? Oh that’s right I’m wearing a pediatrician.” A good chunk of the episode consists of Sam and Dean laying low and Sam explaining to Dean why he trusts Ruby.
Turns out that when Sam was alone, Lilith sent two demons – including Ruby, who schemed her way out of Hell again – to kill Sam. But Ruby doublecrossed her partner and Lilith again and saved Sam. She then showed him how to use his demon-gifted mental powers to exorcise demons out of humans without killing the host. She and Sam soon become very close…if you get the drift. Dean’s reaction to that bit of news as Sam is telling it is great.
Finally, to close out the episode, the Winchesters are visited by the angels, who have a bit of shocking news. After hearing their news, I have a theory about who Anna is and why she can hear the angels talking. Invisotext on: I think she’s a nephilim, a half human / half angel. Which might explain another reason that the angels want her dead. Invisotext off. There’s some great stuff going on, both in this episode and this season. This may be my favorite show on TV now.
