Empire chatted with Lauren Shuler-Donner, the lady behind the X-Men film franchise, about the possibilty of a Magneto solo film ever happening. The film has been talked about forever, but while X-Men Origins: Wolverine is on its way to theaters next year, there’s been pretty much no forward momentum on the baddie’s origin story.
Shuler-Donner doesn’t quite say as much, but it seems like Magneto‘s fate is tied in to Wolverine‘s. (Which is the recipient of much bad buzz – bad buzz without a solid source. So suspicious.) “[W]e’ll have to see,” she says. “We have a script on Magneto which is actually sort of Magneto and Charles Xavier. It’s Erik and Charles in their early, early years.”
Empire points out that Production Weekly has some more info on that basic plot point: “The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realisation that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.”
I had heard some rumors that Charles would be a soldier who liberates Magneto’s death camp, but that would really make no sense as it would create a huge age gap between the two of them. However they meet, the X-Men comic stories that dealt with the doomed friendship of the two always intrigued me. Here’s hoping that the script actually deals, in an interesting way, with how their two philosophies towards mutant liberation came to differ so drastically.
