It’s not official, but a source of Bloody-Disgusting.com says that Neil Blomkamp’s Alien 5 will have to wait a little longer. Apparently, Ridley Scott has decided that he’s going to make Prometheus 2 first, with Blomkamp having to wait until that one’s in the can.
The order probably does make sense. Scott already said that he has a finished script at hand, and even though we don’t know any cast beyond Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, Fox will probably shortly announce cast members. So it seems the just announced The Cartel will be Scott’s next after Prometheus 2.
Meanwhile, Blomkamp doesn’t really have that much ready. It began with a package of an outline, several concept artworks, and an enthusiastic Sigourney Weaver, but there doesn’t seem to be a full script yet (read this for a CHUD history of Blomkamp’s Alien 5). Michael Biehn recently showed up at the Sheffield Film and Comic Con and told the crowd that so far Blomkamp has only talked to him. He hasn’t gotten an official acting offer and not even a script. He also claimed that Blomkamp’s idea would indeed ignore Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection which is fairly odd as Blomkamp had already promised angry Alien fans that his approach would NOT overwrite those two. While it seems pretty much impossible to bring back the real Ellen Ripley in a believable way, at least BD’s source chimes in saying that Biehn might not be accurate.
Maybe Blomkamp’s initial pitch actually ignored Alien 3 and that’s the only thing Biehn has heard so far. Maybe Fox and Scott have since demanded that Blomkamp finds a logical way to explain Ripley’s survival.
It probably means that Neil Blomkamp is free to make a full movie inbetween. Let’s find out what the hell The Larke is. Please let it have Limahl in a starring role.
