How did this slip by me? Tremors is one of my absolute favorite films, and I’ll go to bat for it being one of the fan-friendliest franchises out there. I still get perturbed when I think about how The Adventures of Pluto Nash derailed director Ron Underwood and how he’s now been relegated to ABC’s television graveyard. You’d never think that the director of nine episodes of Once Upon A Time also directed one of the most fun monster movies in the history of cinema.

The reason the Tremors franchise has always kept people coming back has a lot to do with original writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson sticking around for the entire ride. This new installment only has a story credit for them, so I’m hoping this still feels like a Tremors adventure, but screenwriter John Whelpley did write Tremors 3: Back to Perfection, so things are looking okay. Of course, having Michael Gross pop up for one more Burt Gummer performance is always a treat, though having him be joined by Jamie Kennedy is giving me flashbacks of Grady from Tremors 2: Aftershock. Also, when exactly did Jamie Kennedy embrace his spirit animal, the pufferfish?

I wonder if this entry will leave the graboid life-cycle alone or if we’re in for yet another wacky creature (that one scene in what looks like a kitchen leads me to believe we’re gonna see a new beastie). From what I can tell from this trailer, the monster effects are looking good and practical, and that has always been one of the strongest factors in the Tremors films. Okay, now I’m just doing some stupid fan-babbling because I can’t believe this is even a thing. I figured the series was dead and buried after the lackluster fourth entry and the delightfully insular television series, but here is Tremors 5: Bloodlines! …Well, I guess I’ll take a weak subtitle when the movies manage to be one of the only franchises to continually number their entries.

I’m not expecting this to be great (let’s be honest, this is a franchise much like Jurassic Park. There’s only one good movie), but seeing some graboid action is never something I’m going to pass up. Tremors 5: Bloodlines burrows out of the ground this October.
