It’s always a big deal when Disney releases another animated classic from its vaults. This week, they raise the stakes with the release of the Platinum Edition of Sleeping Beauty. It isn’t just a classic film released amongst the money grabbing attempts at sequels. It is Disney’s first release in the Blu-Ray format. Disney has announced they are going to release five platinum classics over the next two years, this being the first. They plan to follow up with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Fantasia 2000, and Beauty and the Beast. Each disc will include a BD Live component, allowing kids to get online directly and play interactive games. .

Most people these days either hate M. Night Shyamalan or just think it’s cool to say they hate the guy. Personally I really like most of his films. The Sixth Sense is a pretty solid film, Unbreakable is fantastic, and Signs is really good as well. I had no real problems with The Village and while Lady in the Water was a bit too much, it did feature some good acting (thanks mostly to Paul Giamatti). The latest movie to get the Shyamalan hate treatment was The Happening, and that kid of puzzled me at first. Night said while making the movie that he was working on something B-level, so what harm could this movie possibly cause? If the problem is it is boring, that is a huge problem. I have heard differing opinions. Roger Ebert states that its pace and substance allowed me to examine such thoughts, and to ask how I might respond to a wake-up call from nature. Russ stated that the film offer(s) very little to work with. With no evil tendrils or insistent roots to unleash, we watch with marked lack of concern as…nothing…is deployed against humanity. I know most people hate Shyamalan these days, but as an old fan I think I might give him a chance anyway.

I really liked this movie. In a summer full of bad comedies (The Love Guru), it was refreshing to see something that I actually made me laugh. I consider this Sandler’s best comedy since Waterboy. Of course, I have been an Adam Sandler fan since the beginning and even find thing in Little Nicky to laugh at. Lately, his movies have not really appealed to me. 50 First Dates, Chuck and Larry and Click just didn’t seem to possess what I really like about Sandler. This movie reminded me why I love Sandler. It has all the gags his fans are used to. There are the cameos you come to expect (Dave Matthews as a redneck. Mariah Carey in a pretty funny appearance. Michael Buffer as the bad guy was GOLD). It keeps things raunchy and moves Sandler back out of the family based humor he had drifted into in recent years. I loved this movie and make no apologies for that fact.

Halloween (Three-Disc Unrated Collector’s Edition)
d. Rob Zombie
c. Malcolm McDowell, Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch

Special Features

  • 4 and a half hour documentary
  • Commentary by Rob Zombie
  • 17 deleted scenes
  • Alternate ending
  • Bloopers
  • The Many Masks of Michael Myers
  • Re-Imagining HALLOWEEN
  • Meet the Cast

Whether you liked Rob Zombie’s attempt at recreating the Michael Myers story or not, this is a set you need to pick up. I should rephrase that. If you are someone who hated the movie and doesn’t care about special features or anything outside of watching the movie in question, you can go ahead and ignore this release. If you love special features, can’t get enough of making of documentaries and love the behind the scenes stuff, this three-disc edition is a must by. The Devil’s Rejects was a pretty damn good movie but what made the DVD spectacular was the second disc featuring a feature length making of documentary. Prior to that release, I would say Full Tilt Boogie was the best making documentary of I had seen when it was included on the From Dusk Till Dawn DVD set. Well, actually Hearts of Darkness was the best one I had seen, then Full Tilt Boogie. Well, once I saw 30 Days in Hell: The Making of The Devil’s Rejects, Full Tilt Boogie seemed to lose a bit of its luster. At 145 minutes, it clocked in at 36 minutes longer than the movie it referenced. Now we get this set, which includes on the third disc a 4 and a half hour documentary. Yeah, you read that right. 4 and a half hours of behind the scenes making of stuff.  I will buy it and watch the documentary, even if I never watch the movie again. Actually, I will probably wait until October 21 when the Blu-Ray is released.

Paranoid Park
d. Gus Van Sant
c. Gabe Nevins, Daniel Liu, Taylor Momsen, Jake Miller

It seems to me Gus Van Sant is not really as relevant as he once was. Forgoing the lure of the Hollywood blockbuster, he has been content to make little personal movies for a very long time now. His next picture, the Harvey Milk film starring Sean Penn, may push him back into the spotlight a bit because the story has Oscar bait written all over it. But if you go back and look at his last few films you find Last Days (with overtones of Kurt Cobain’s last days before his suicide), Elephant (very reminiscent to the Columbine shooting) and Gerry (which has Matt Damon and Casey Affleck walking, and walking, and walking). In his fourth movie in a row dealing with death, Paranoid Park deals with a skater who is involved in the accidental death a security guard. This movie retains his art house style and fans of the previous three movies might find a lot to like in this one. For those who miss Van Sant working within the system, Milk is coming this December.

HITCHCOCK

If you need me to tell you what these three movies are about, you are not a true cinema fan. What I’ll do is tell you what you can expect from the new releases.

Psycho will include feature commentary with Hitchcock author Stephen Rebello, newsreel footage, a number of featurettes (The Shower Scene, The Psycho Archives, The Making of Psycho, In the Master’s Shadow: Hitchcock’s Legacy), promotional materials (The Shower Scene Storyboards, posters, Psycho ads, lobby cards, Behind-the-Scene Photographs, Production Photographs, Production Notes), both the original and re-release trailers, Hitchcock/Truffaut Interview Excerpts, and Alfred Hitchcok Presents “Lamb to the Slaughter.”

Rear Window will include feature commentary with Hitchcock author John Fawell, Rear Window Ethics documentary, a conversation with screenwriter John Michael Hayes, Pure Cinema: Through the Eyes of the Master feature, Hitchcock./Truffaut Interview Excerpts, Breaking Barriers: The Sound of Hitchcock feature, production photographs, production notes, both the original and re-release trailers, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents “Mr. Blanchard’s Secret.”

Vertigo will include feature commentary with Associate Producer Herbert Coleman, Restoration Team Robert A. Harris and James C. Katz and other Vertigo participants, feature commentary with director William Friedkin, Obsessed with Vertigo: New Life for Hitchcock’s Masterpiece feature, Partners in Crime: Hitchcock’s Collaborators, Hitchcock/Truffaut Interview Excerpts, Foreign Censorship Ending, The Vertigo Archives, Production Notes, the original and restoration trailers and Alfred Hitchcock Presents “The Cast of Mr. Pelham.”

CRITERIONS

Criterion will be releasing two more classic films this week. The first I will talk about is Le Doulos, by New Wave master Jean Pierre Melville (Le Samourai). Sticking with the underworld he knows so well, Melville crafts a story where nothing is as it seems. It features two criminals, one who has just gotten out of prison and the second a man who might or might not have fingered him to begin with. The Criterion will include selected audio commentary by film scholar Ginette Vincendeau, video interviews, archival interviews, the original trailer and a new essay by film critic Glenn Kenny.

Le Deuxieme Souffle is also by Melville that tells the old familiar story of the man fresh out of prison coaxed into “one last robbery.” The Criterion includes an audio commentary by Ginette Vincendeau, new video interviews with director Bertrand Tavernier, archival footage interviews, the original trailer, and a new essay by film critic Adrian Danks.
