There are only two types of people in the world…
Rockband people and Guitar Hero people.
No, you can’t be both. The line is drawn in the sand, choose a side, or get out of the way.
I am a Rockband person.
For all intensive purposes these are really the same game. Sure, some of the game play elements are slightly different and the instruments might have some minor differences, but basically, you’ve got the same game. The only difference between them; and ultimately what will determine who wins and who loses is the music.
For a while Rockband was the absolute winner in the category of musical selection, destroying Guitar Hero with nothing else other than the sheer amount of tracks available, even if some of them were from indie/obscure bands. Guitar Hero counter punched with some more modern hits and a commitment to more rock heavy music (Aerosmith/Metallica).
However back near the New Year, Rockband dealt what might ultimately be the death blow when it was announced that they and not Guitar Hero had inked an exclusive deal to release music from the Beatles. In the world of music video games there are two bands that can swing the balance of power. The Beatles is one of them; Led Zeppelin is the other. Since Zeppelin looks like it will never allow its music into games; the Beatles are the ultimate trump card.
But if that wasn’t enough; this week Rockband users got another reason to celebrate. And no, I’m not talking about the three tracks from SpongeBob Squarepants that are set to be released (though I’m sure they’ll be plenty of drunk parties that have some fun with those songs).
Four words every Rockband geek has been waiting to hear:
Journey:
Don’t
Stop
Believing
Thats right, the mega 80s hit is coming to Rockband on Tuesday. I don’t really know what to say to Guitar Hero fans. The hits just keep on coming and not in a good way. The Beatles game doesn’t come out till next Christmas, but already it looks like a winner is truly emerging from the Rockband/Guitar Hero war.
If you’ll excuse me; I’ve gotta make sure I have enough Microsoft points….so I can buy the Spongebob; I mean, Journey song on Tuesday.
Journey…I totally meant Journey.
