Remember when I talked about Tom Hardy possibly playing The Punisher for Marvel? Well, he’s not. But, hot damn, did Marvel go and net themselves one hell of an actor instead.
Jon Bernthal, best known for his work on The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street and Fury, will play Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher on season two of Netflix’s Daredevil. I don’t have to say anything else, right? That’s some brilliant casting. It’s not someone you were thinking of for that role but it just works. Bernthal’s previous work suggests he’ll be spot-on for the part. The man plays tough and dark like nobody’s business, now imagine him with a load of guns blowing up Hell’s Kitchen. Season two of Daredevil just transcended to a whole new level of must-watch.
Once again, Marvel is making you so happy you have a Netflix subscription. It’s seems they’re taking lesser-known characters from their universe and giving them a proper portrayal on the small screen. That makes more sense for characters like Daredevil, Kingpin and The Punisher, whose layered backstories and decidedly not-family-friendly stories play better in your home than on the big screen. Plus they are able to explore these characters much more, not just at two hour increments every few years. A Punisher or Daredevil movie would be fun but a TV series is definitely the way to go.
This all leads to a big question: when do we get a Punisher spin-off? Surely Marvel has that in the works. Introduce The Punisher in season two of Daredevil, have him make life hectic for Matt Murdock, then send him on his way for his own show. This just has to happen, Marvel.
EDIT: Oh, look at this snazzy new logo for season two (via Twitter):
