I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Lifetime movie. I’ve certainly seen stuff that would qualify as a Lifetime movie in terms of production, content, and quality (the Melissa Joan Hart starring Twisted Desire was mandatory viewing for me back in my younger days. I dread revisiting that flick), but never anything actually produced by the network.
That might change on June 20th when A Deadly Adoption premieres. Why? Because the film stars Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, two actors who are better known for their comedic talents. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen Ferrell pull some dramatic weight in stuff like Stranger Than Fiction and Everything Must Go. As far as Wiig goes, I know she has the insufferable looking Welcome To Me under her belt, but I don’t doubt her acting chops either.
Apparently, Ferrell has wanted to do a Lifetime movie for a while and wanted to keep the film a secret for as long as possible. According to THR, the plot revolves around “a successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman (played by 90210 alum Jessica Lowndes) in the hopes of adopting her unborn child — then things quickly go awry.” The article also says the movie is “a campy, fun, contemporary wink at the genre,” which almost leads me to believe that they are doing some PR work in case people find the film to be unintentionally funny.
I love the idea of a silly film taking itself incredibly seriously and using that seriousness as its comedic backbone (a great example of this is The FP), so maybe this could end up being enjoyable, but I also hate when people try to craft “so bad it’s good” pictures. They never find that magic that a truly naive film seems to cultivate. I don’t know if that’s the case with A Deadly Adoption, but I guess we can all find out on June 20th.
