Not sure where I’ve been since Sundance that Fear(s) of the Dark wasn’t high on my radar, but after watching the stunning new trailer it has climbed into the upper rank of films I’m anxious to see. The animated anthology film, directed by graphic artists Charles Burns, Blutch, Pierre Di Sciullo, Michel Pirus and Romain Slocombe the film collects a series of highly unusual tales designed to inspire fear and, if the images are any indication, joy. Animals, insects and the behavior of humans are the basis for many of these stories, which are largely rendered in black and white. Some are stark, like Burns’s work seen above, while others are distinctly more lush. Pray for a release wide enough that you can catch this in a real theater.
