Flash Gordon is awesome. I have fond memories of watching chapters of the Buster Crabbe serials with my dad and having him introduce me to the camp masterpiece that is the 1980 film. I even have a vinyl record featuring episodes from the 1935 radio dramatization, the first adaptation of Flash Gordon ever.
So, today’s news that Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct a new version of the interplanetary adventurer has me singing the above Queen song over and over again (you know they’re gonna get someone to cover that for the movie). Vaughn’s pop sensibilities are a perfect match for the eclectic and unabashedly fun universe that Flash Gordon inhabits. Now that Guardians of the Galaxy has proven to Hollywood that you can be goofy and weird without losing any heart, it seems like the perfect time for Flash Gordon to return.
I’m very happy for this news, especially because it means a new generation will discover Flash Gordon in a better way than the painful Sam J. Jones cameo in Ted.
Thanks to Chewer Judas Booth for the heads up on this news!
