The Big Lebowski – 10th Anniversary Edition
d.
The Coen brothers
c. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steev Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman

With Burn After Reading hitting theaters this weekend, I guess studios feel it is time to revisit the Coen brothers. After last year’s masterpiece No Country for Old Men finally netting the boys their first Oscar, this next flick takes us back to the quirky comedy of the brother’s spectacular back catalogue. It’s hard to believe it has been ten years since The Big Lebowski was released. Hell, it’s even harder to believe it’s been twelve years since Fargo hit theaters. I’m happy to see the boys back to what looks like this type of comedy, though and I can’t wait to see this new film this weekend. So, the million dollar question is what makes this new version of the adventures of Jeffrey Lebowski, Walter Sobchak and Donny Kerabatsos (I love the Coen’s characters names) worth getting? Well, allow me to whip mine out and see which one is bigger. Hey, look at that – mine ain’t got shit on it but an interview. If I remember right, there was a bowling ball looking special edition that came out some time back. Let’s see what is on that one. It included an introduction by Mortimer Young, Jeff Bridges’ photography, a ‘Making of The Big Lebowski’ featurette and production notes. This special edition blows away both of those versions, when it comes to extra features.

  • Introduction by Mortimer Young – Mortimer Young, a practitioner of “non-uptight” film preservation showcases his mind-blowing restoration of the infamous “toe scene.”
  • Jeff Bridges Photography
  • The Dude’s Life – In this all new bonus feature, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro take a look back at their performances and how their delivery of the Coen brothers’ dialog became classic movie lines
  • The Dude Abides: The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later – A never-before-seen conversation with the cast about the film’s decade-long reign as a cult classic
  • Production Notes
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • The Making of The Big Lebowski
  • The Lebowski Fest: An Achiever’s Story – An in-depth look at the annual Lebowski Fest, a celebration of The Dude and his world, attended by thousands each year
  • Flying Carpets and Bowling Pin Dreams: The Dream Sequences of the Dude – A look at some of the Dude’s trippiest fantasies so fans can learn for the first time how these innovative scenes were created
  • Interactive Map – Take a tour of the locations of The Big Lebowski, then and now
  • Jeff Bridges Photo Book – For more than 30 years, Jeff Bridges has been snapping pictures on movie sets. The accomplished photographer presents a portfolio of shots taken on the set of The Big Lebowski.

The Forbidden Kingdom
d. Rob Minkoff
c. Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Lifei Liu, Colin Chou, Michael Angarano

And it comes. The DVD release that will, once again, make me curse the name of the DVD companies for their shady packaging. There is two versions of The Forbidden Kingdom. The first version is a bare bones single disc edition. For $5 more you can get a 2-Disc Special Edition. The second disc is a digital download. HOWEVER!!!!!!!!! They apparently realized we have seen through their shady tactic of calling a 2-Disc Edition a special edition with that download the only extra. In this case, they put a bunch of special features on the first disc – but only in the double disc set. This means, to me, they had room to put all this on the single disc edition but chose not to in order to force you to buy the 2-Disc with the digital download. For $5 more. Why they couldn’t put the extras on the single disc as well amounts to one thing: greed. The following features are only on the first disc of the two disc set.

  • Audio commentary with director Rob Minkoff and writer John Fusco
  • “The Kung Fu Dream Team” featurette
  • “:Dangerous Beauty” featurette
  • “Discovering China” featurette
  • “Filming in Chinawood” featurette
  • “Monkey King and The Eight Immortals” featurette
  • Blooper Reel
  • Deleted scenes with audio commentary by Rob Minkoff and John Fusco
  • Pre-Visualization featurette – takes the viewer from the storyboards through pre-production animation footage to the final finished look for selected scenes throughout the film, accompanied by commentary from Rob Minkoff

Baby Mama
d. Michael McCullers
c. Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Greg Kinnear, Dax Shepard, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Martin

I really like Tina Fey. I thought Mean Girls was a really good movie and one of the only Lindsey Lohan movies I give a shit about. I also think 30 Rock is fucking brilliant. The girl has talent pouring out of orifices I can only dream of. I never liked Amy Poehler. She always annoyed the shit out of me in just about everything I have seen her in. That was all before I saw the very surprising Hamlet II. She was very funny in that and showed great comic timing when delivering some very funny off color jokes. It made me think twice about whether I wanted to see this movie or not. I mean, Fey made me care about a Lohan movie, and even though she did not write this one, I would assume she had a bit of creative control. I should give her the benefit of the doubt here as well.

The Fall
d. Tarsem
c. Catinca Untaru, Justine Waddell, Lee Pace, Kim Uylenbroek

I will admit to saying I don’t know shit about this movie. I have heard of it, and I know it is by the guy who made the visually dynamic, yet shallow Jennifer Lopez vehicle The Cell. I won’t buy a movie based on Tarsem’s name. What is up with that name anyway? Be right back………..Ok, his name is Tarsem Singh Dhandwar, and I would assume he only uses the name Tarsem to avoid the similar jokes poked at Shyamalan for his name. Wikipedia also says his films are noted for their operatic elements – lush colors, desert landscapes, horses, extensive costume design and sets, exotic locations and lack of digital animation. Am I forgetting something or wasn’t The Cell full of digital animation? Either way, this movie should not be seen based on Tarsem’s name, but on the recommendation of the “presenters.” In much the same way Quentin Tarantino pimped out some pretty damn good foreign flicks using his name, Tarsem gets two of the greatest fucking directors in the world to pimp this movie. David Fincher and Spike Jonze presents: The Fall. I’m sold.

Kill Bill – Volumes 1 & 2 [Blu-ray] (Amazon.com Exclusive)
d. Quentin Tarantino
c. Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivicia A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Sonny Chiba, Julia Dreyfus, Michael Bowen

Dear Quentin Tarantino,

You kick all kinds of ass and I love every movie you have made. I am so excited that you are finally getting around to making Inglorious Bastards and I really don’t want to distract you from that because I know you must have a severe form of ADD and have the attention span of a gnat. However, I have one request – RELEASE THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR!!!!!! I am very excited to see Kill Bill coming out on Blu-Ray, but I would have been willing to pay the extra money for BOTH FUCKING MOVIES PUT TOGETHER LIKE YOU PROMISED SO MANY YEARS AGO!!!!!!!! I will be there on opening weekend to see your new movie, but please take this request into consideration.

Cool Hand Luke (Deluxe Edition)
d. Stuart Rosenberg
c. Paul Newman, George Kennedy, Dennis Hopper

Paul Newman is long for our world. The man I consider the greatest actor alive has put out a number of fantastic movies over his storied career. The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The Sting. The Verdict. Slap Shot. The Hudsucker Proxy. Road to Perdition. This man had a career that anyone would envy and was fantastic from beginning to end. He was the presence that made an overly sappy Message in a Bottle carry the emotional weight it did. I carry such an admiration for the man, I would place him on a pedestal above even his contemporary Robert Redford as the better actor of his era. When he eventually passes away (with reports are differing daily on that matter), we will lose a true National Treasure. Until then, enjoy the career of this fantastic performer. Hell, enjoy it on Blu-Ray!

c. Louie Anderson, Dave Attell, Lewis Black, David Cross, Craig Ferguson, Carrie Fisher, Larry Flynt, Tom Green, Kathy Griffin, Arsenio Hall, Jamie Kennedy, Jon Lovitz, Bill Maher, Howie Mandel, Patton Oswalt, Rob Zombie, Devin Faraci

Who out there has ever wanted to own a DVD starring Devin Faraci? Put your hands down, your reading a column and I can’t actually see you. Well, this week all your dreams will finally be realized. You can now own the movie that involves Devin Faraci during the immortal moment in time where he calls Leonard Maltin a twatmuffin. Also, according to Devin, you get to see Uwe Boll beat up Aint It Cool News’ MiraJeff so badly he pukes. Comedy gold.
