It’s kind of crazy that these last two X-Men films have been the best of the bunch. Having Jennifer Lawrence step into Rebecca Romijn’s body paint and pasties as Mystique was definitely one of the things that X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past had going for them. Looks like that won’t be the case after X-Men: Apocalypse comes out. Speaking with MTV, the star of House at the End of the Street broke the news by stating, “It is my last one, actually. Yes.”
I must admit that even though Mystique was at her best in First Class, I wrote in my review that the character felt less enthusiastic this last time around. Since Days of Future Past has opened up the potential for anything to happen, it’s very likely that Mystique could be getting offed in Apocalypse. Anything’s possible at this point, and with writer Simon Kinberg saying that Apocalypse would act as the end of the Charles/Erik/Raven trilogy, it makes sense for Lawrence to kick the bucket and drive the final wedge between Professor X and Magneto.
With Lawrence departing two major franchises (X-Men and The Hunger Games), you have to wonder what her career strategy is now. Is she going to team up with David O. Russell for more Oscar bait like Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle? Here’s hoping she gets roped into some more kickass flicks, because she’s one of the toughest actresses we’ve got right now.
