This looks good. A small scale sci-fi picture that seems deeply character based without losing focus on its bigger ideas. Plus, it looks like this will veer into horror territory before everything is done. Another plus in my book.
Alex Garland makes his directorial debut with Ex Machina, and it looks like he’s been learning to train his eye while around directors like Danny Boyle and Mark Romanek. I dig Garland a lot, and the great critical response to this (it premiered this past January in the UK) has me pumped. We’ll also be getting a little pre-Star Wars: The Force Awakens on-screen team-up with Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, so there’s a doofier impetus to go and see this.
Ex Machina hits the states on April 10th, so if you’re one of those people who whines about there not being adult-oriented genre films at the movie theater, you better be seeing this opening weekend.
