Lists are great. They inspire discussion, create arguments, and tend to spiral off into fun new lists. When you do a list about the “BEST” of anything it goes from being fun to becoming a hotbed for arguments. There’s no such thing as a definitive list but I’ve decided to pull from my rather extensive life of film watching and put it to good use.
This is not the “film critic’s top 100” list. There’s no guarantee Citizen Kane or The Bicycle Thief will be in the top echelon or even on the list. This is the 100 movies I would put my name on as my top 100. If I died tomorrow this would represent the 100 films I find most vital, special, or ones that bonded to whatever it is that makes me me. I’m not including documentaries, though that might make for a nice supplemental list.
The first 80 will be in no particular order. The last 20 will be in very particular order. One a day, you have my word.
#9 – The Big Lebowski
Message Board Thread Discussion.
Master Index of the 100 Best Movies Ever.
This is the top twenty. These are in order.
Why is it here:
This movie was a classic on day one. One of the best theater experiences ever, followed by many more. It was the DVD I craved more than any other and when I got my mitts on it it was in the rotation a sickening amount. What the Coen Brothers were able to pull off from out of nowhere is astounding. Taking great detective stories and musicals and crafting this nutty bowling movie is a miracle. A once in a lifetime miracle of a movie.
Moments to savor:
Everything? The big moments. The little moments. The drawing of the penis. Every moment with Jesus Quintana. Watching Jeff Bridges pull back another layer on an incredible career and deliver a signature role in his 50’s. Sam Elliott, the epitome of awesome. The Nihilists. The fake porn. The music. The musical number. The scattering of the ashes. The land lord.
Higher than any other movie.
It’s sorta sad how this became a pop culture thing. I’m happy the movie is considered a success now, but anytime Spencers and Hot Topic join the bandwagon it’s a bit of a fuck.
