I don’t know where I was last weekend when AICN linked this presentation of the first trailer for Miyazaki’s Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, but I’m glad the thing is still lurking on YouTube. (The original post was taken down.) While I’d rather see only the trailer, not this television showing with commentators talking about how pretty it is (and how much like Nausiacaa some of the art is, which is quite correct) this is better than nothing. I see a lot of the ‘classic’ Miyazaki here; there’s a lot of the gentle vibe of Totoro, with a bit of backsplash from mulutiple Disney and Pixar films.
Also worth noting is a news item from Nausicaa.net which mentions that Miyazaki is going to begin work on more short films for the Ghibli Museum. One may feature a sumo wrestling mouse.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is about a boy who befriends a female goldfish princess who wants to become human. It opens in Japan on July 19th and will eventually arrive in North America via producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.
