What’s great about Blu-Ray, even as disc-based home video sales decline, is that it’s the cinephile’s format. The studios know it, too. For over fifteen years (DVD is getting old!) we’ve been putting a lot of ugly DVD and Blu-Ray covers on our shelves, but over the last couple of years there’s been a shift (especially in genre films) to entice cinephiles with limited edition cover art that might actually look good on a shelf.
Fox and MGM have partnered with Skuzzles Cult Decor to tempt us with a new batch of pretty re-releases, and I gotta say, some of these are really beautiful. While I love the original Species art, this new cover really captures the pulpy spirit of the film. The Jeepers Creepers one ain’t bad, either. I’m always fascinated by how cover art can capture the essence of a film, and while some of these don’t quite nail it, there isn’t an ugly cover among them.
According to Bloody-Disgusting, you should be able to pick these up at most American and Canadian big box Blu-Ray retailers (Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target) for the low price of seven or eight bucks, but I’m hearing they’re pretty scarce. Hopefully more will trickle in. DVD copies are also available, but why settle for less than 1080p?
