If I had to list my top ten favorite video games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus is probably somewhere in the middle. An all-timer, for sure. What I love about it is that it’s definitely an “art game” in that it’s high concept and wasn’t a whole lot like anything else at the time. It featured a unique aesthetic and sparse narrative, yet it was also a mainstream piece of entertainment from a major developer. It’s a marvel.

There had been stirrings of a film adaptation for the last few years, and I was particularly excited at the prospect of a version with Josh Trank directing. Now, with Trank handling the new Fantastic Four and a Star Wars spinoff film, Mama director Andrés Muschietti has taken the helm of Shadow of the Colossus.

The game itself isn’t very conducive to film adaptation. With a silent protagonist, repetitive episodic structure, and very few characters, it will be a big challenge for screenwriter Seth Lochhead, who is writing a new draft of the screenplay under Muschietti’s supervision. Hopefully this team will stick around, because I really want this to happen. A release date has not yet been announced, but I’m sure we’ll hear one soon enough.
