With the recent passing of legendary FX maestro Stan Winston it seems somewhat poignant that MGM Home Entertainment is re-issuing Mr. Winston’s lone directorial effort Pumpkinhead. While Pumpkinhead may not be as well-known a Winston creation to the mainstream as it is to us hardcore horror geeks, I think it’s safe to say it’s always held a special place in our heart…at least it has in mine.
As I’m sure you’ve already noticed, the above artwork hasn’t changed a whole hell of a lot since the last sub par DVD release, and there are no details on whether or not we’re going to finally get a widescreen version this time around (we’ve been handed the damned pan & scan versions ever since it hit the home video market) but there are a few more extras for a change:
• Commentary by co-screenwriter Gary Gerani and creature FX creators Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis, moderated by Scott Spiegel
• Seven all-new featurettes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Still gallery
Sadly, it seems Stan Winston was unable to participate in any sort of commentary prior to his unfortunate passing, but at least his former proteges, Tom Woodruff, Jr. and Alec Gillis, (Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc.), were able to put their two-bits in; they worked under Winston on the Pumpkinhead creature along with Shane Mahan, Richard Landon and John Rosengrant.
Look for Pumpkinhead to hit DVD shelves September 9/08.
