Have you seen They Came Together yet? It’s not just one of the funniest movies of the year, it also has a killer Michael Shannon cameo. My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done fans won’t know what hit them.
But I prefer my Michael Shannon the way he prefers PCP (allegedly), in large doses. That’s why I’m excited about this trailer for Young Ones, which sets Shannon and Nicolas Hoult in a robo-dustbowl for some Grapes of Wrath-style shenanigans. The sci-fi looks low key and inexpensive, which is fine, because it’ll allow for more scenes of Shannon’s eyes fleeing from his face in a fit of exuberant anger. Did I mention how much I love Michael Shannon?
IMDB says this is, “Set in the future when water is hard to find a teenage boy sets out to protect his family and survive.” That sounds more like a Nicolas Hoult vehicle, since he’s the closest thing to a teenage boy this movie has (and then, not really that close). I’m dumb and wrong, Kodi Smit-McPhee is in this. He’s surely the boy. Although you’ll have to excuse me while I now dream of a movie where Michael Shannon plays a kid through some Vice Versa magic. We need to make that movie if only to here him scream, “get out of my room!” at a child. Back to Young Ones: Hoult’s character name is Flem Lever. Because Snot Boogie was already taken (R.I.P.).
One more thing: this is directed by Jake Paltrow, younger brother of Gwenyth Paltrow. Does that make you hate him and the movie immediately? Discuss.
