The Bourne Legacy occupies far more of my brain space than I’d have imagined after walking out of the theater two(?) Summers ago. It’s not a terrible film (a wolf is blown up via drone strike, so…), but the nonsense with the chems didn’t do much for me. Meh, at least Aaron Cross (that’s his name, right?) was able to “viral out” by the end and escape or whatever. Maybe this didn’t sink in as much as I’d previously alluded to…

Anyway, Justin Lin (Fast Six) is set to direct the next entry, which will still use the Bourne naming scheme despite the continued absence of that character. The Bourne Legacy made sense in much the same way The Ghost of Frankenstein did, but they’re really stretching at this point. And poor Jeremy Renner! The man was incredible on Louie a week or so ago, but he can’t catch a break when it comes to his two major franchises. Hawkeye got some cool stuff to do in The Avengers, but without a single appearance since 2012 it’s clear that there just isn’t much room for that character in Marvel’s cinematic universe.

And then there’s the Bourne series, which was just delayed from August 2015 to July 2016. Look, there’s no franchise without Damon and while Legacy was a valiant effort to prove the contrary, the adherence to calling this The Bourne Something is just Universal’s way of calling out their ex-girlfriend’s name mid-orgasm. If anything should hold this movie up, it should be Renner, who needs to find something was that built for him and around him. One that doesn’t bring sci-fi drugs into a spy series.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is being blamed for the delay, by the way. Scheduling and such.
