Scott Glenn as disgraced former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, eh? I can’t quite see the resemblance, but I can definitely hear it, and it sounds like Captain Bart Mancuso bitching about the CIA, only more pinched.
As he did with JFK and Nixon, Stone is going almost exclusively for recognizable faces to portray the key Bush administration players in W. In other words, the film’s success is heavily contingent on the makeup department not pulling a Ghosts of Mississippi (probably the worst old-age prosthetics I’ve ever seen). At this point, I’m open to the idea of Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Banks kicking my ass as the POTUS and First Lady, excited for Jeffrey Wright’s rendition of Colin Powell, and actively dreading the smoldering Thandie Newton as the frigid Condoleeza Rice.
But if there are any surefire acting nominations coming out of this movie, I’d like to place a sizable wager on Glenn as Rumsfeld, Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush and Toby Jones as Karl Rove. Even if Stone fails to get Bush, these three performances are going to be worth the price of admission alone.
