Lydia

Now that we’ve all decided to repress any worries about Beetlejuice 2 we can  look forward to what might end up being a fun, if surprising, sequel. Keaton’s coming back! Burton’s coming back! I doubt Jeffrey Jones will be cast but who knows.

It seems one of the big names from the first film, Winona Ryder, will be coming back for the long-delayed follow-up. Speaking with The Daily Beast, Ryder suggested she’s gearing up to play Lydia once again.

Ryder:

“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy. But it sounds like it might be happening.”

Ryder then went on to profess how much the character means to her and how she is interested to see “what she is doing 27 years later.”

Ryder’s possible involvement adds a whole other layer to the project. We weren’t sure before if Beetlejuice would be returning to haunt and harass another family or if other characters would pop back up. If Lydia does return, this means Beetlejuice 2 will be a true sequel, not just the titular character in a brand new situation. Now, Ryder could be providing just a glorified cameo before Beetlejuice is transported to Hawaii, New York or any number of places but I’m hoping this means the new film will be strongly connected to its predecessor. Like Ryder, I’m curious to see what everyone has been up to in the last 27 years.

One major request from this writer: please, please, please find a place for Catherine O’Hara.
