Point Break is a perfect movie, so of course its getting remade with an “extreme sports” angle. The update found funding this weekend despite lacking a cast and the general soullessness inherent in making a movie called, “Point Break” that has far less surfing and far more, I dunno, Razor scootering on a half pipe?
The Hollywood Reporter is calling this the biggest deal out of this year’s AFM, and the budget is expected to fall somewhere in the range of $90 to $110 million dollars. Why so high? Director Ericson Core (Invincible) wants to eschew the Southern Californian setting of the original for a multinational shoot in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, China and Malta.
“This will be much more like a James Bond film,” Core told buyers in the AFM pitch reel, giving an idea of the planned scale of the movie.
Actually, it sounds a lot more like the last few Fast & Furious movies, which have been ripping off Kathryn Bigelow’s film from the start. An undercover FBI agent getting in too deep with a bunch of charismatic outlaws? Just hire Paul Walker for Johnny Utah and Vin Diesel for Bohdi “XXX” Toretto. Print money, rinse, repeat.
The reasons to love Bigelow’s 1991 original are legion. Gary Busey wants two. Tom Sizemore doesn’t like his hair. John C. McGinley’s ability to identify a blue flame special. Far too many wonderful individual elements that simply can’t be replicated. Oh well. Vaya con Dios, Brah.
Shooting begins next Spring with an eye on an April 2015 release.
