Having overcome the first hurdle of de-Yankeeing their protagonist, Avalanche Studio has come out of the gate swinging with a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming Mad Max game, and boy howdy she is a looker. Unfortunately the whole thing comes wrapped in the “depressing song, monotone narrator” package that seems to have become the standard for big-budget action games, but what is shown of the car and hand-to-hand combat looks appropriately spectacular and vicious. Which is good, because the post-apocalyptic wasteland isn’t quite as deserted as it used to be. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but with everything from Borderlands to Fallout to Autoduel looking to eat Max’s lunch, Avalanche will need to bring something other than nostalgia to the table. Thankfully if the game continues to develop into the Red Dead Road Warrior it seems to be, that shouldn’t be a problem. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think. Really the only complaint I have is the look of Max. We knew from the get-go it wasn’t going to be either Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy’s likeness, but something about it just seems…off. Maybe it’s the beard?
