If you like rock documentaries, a flick you’ll probably want to check out is A Band Called Death. I mentioned it last week in the Underground and I have a review coming tomorrow for it. It’s a great movie about a highly improbably turn of events regarding a punk band of whom you’ve probably never heard. Mondo just came out with a poster for the documentary, and it’s pretty sweet. Very ’70s and…Stargate-y? The details on the poster’s availability are below and you can click on the pic to enlarge.
MONDO, the division of the Alamo Drafthouse championed for bringing art back to movie poster design, has collaborated with artist Jay Shaw to bring you the poster for Drafthouse Films’ rock documentary A BAND CALLED DEATH. Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early ’70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A BAND CALLED DEATH chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger.
“DEATH was formed by brothers David, Dannis and Bobby Hackney after their father passed away in a car accident in 1974. David became fascinated with the metaphysical aspects of mortality, as reflected in the band’s lyrics and visuals. DEATH often used a triangular motif as a visual representation of the three life elements,” said Mondo poster artist Jay Shaw. “If I were hired in the mid 70s to create a gig poster for DEATH this is what I might have come up with. “
A BAND CALLED DEATH is available now on iTunes, VOD and for digital download and will be in theaters Friday, 6/28.
