Last year the ratings board announced that they would take into consideration smoking when rating movies. Activists wanted the MPAA to rate any movie with cigarette smoking with an automatic R rating. It is not the same as when the MPAA refused to allow a movie that showed a bad guy not being punished for his sins, because this ratings change affected the movie whether it was Humphrey Bogart puffing a cigarette as a good guy or Cruella De Vil puffing on one as a villainess. Luckily, the MPAA took the stand that they would use smoking alongside other criteria, including violence and nudity, when making their decision. Following that announcement, the Walt Disney Corporation made the statement that it will discourage depictions of cigarette smoking in its films and will place an anti-smoking PSA on DVD’s of any future film that does depict smoking.  Thanks to the aforementioned Cruella De Vil, I assume that this week’s release of 101 Dalmatians will include that PSA. Because everyone knows, kids want to be like the villainess in this movie. “A villain can be bad without smoking,” executives said. Talk about living in a fucking box. Good release, though, as long as they don’t replace the cigarette with a walkie-talkie or something.

This movie received two Oscar nominations, including one for Best Supporting Actor (Hal Holbrook), yet received little-to-no publicity around my parts. However, the following people seemed to like it: Devin, Jeremy, Nordling, Rath and Dellamorte. If you read the boards, you know those are some pretty qualified opinions to listen to. Directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Into the Wild tells the story of Chris, a young man who gives his life savings to charity, burns his identity and begins a trip that ends up in the wilderness of Alaska. Much of the movie is Chris’ story and the rest of the tremendous cast are people he meets along the way. It will be released in a single bare-boned edition and also a 2-Disc Special Edition, with a grand total of 2 featurettes. I would assume those are pretty long features if they take up an entire second disc. This will also be one of the last HD-DVD releases, I believe.

If you have not seen the original 12 Angry Men, you are missing out on one of the greatest movies out there. Directed by Sidney Lumet, 12 Angry Men tells the story of a group of jurors isolated in a room given the duty to determine one man’s guilt or innocence. The ensemble cast is magnificent for the time period and features great performances by Henry Fonda, Ed Beagley, Lee Cobb, Jack Warden and Jack Klugman. The camerawork is spectacular. With almost the entire movie never leaving the room, Lumet is able to take the scenes and slowly make the room more-and-more claustrophobic by lowering the camera angles, letting the viewers feel as trapped as the characters. I could talk about this movie for hours as it is that well made. Do yourself a favor, and pick up this new edition and discover a true cinematic gem.

One of the lead actors from Nick Nunziata produced Grizzly Park has a new movie coming out this week on DVD. Randy Wayne will co-star in The Fun Park, a new film directed by Rick Walker (Sam and Janet). The story tells us that late one night in 1980, Bobo the Insult Clown was bludgeoned to death while locking up for the night at a Family Fun Park. Legends say his ghost still haunts the old park to this day. Twenty-six years after this event, six teenagers set out to refute the legend. Only one leaves the park alive. After waking up in a mental hospital, Megan tells her psychologist the horrific story of what transpired that night. Unfortunately, the police find no bodies to backup Megan’s tale. When her psychologist stumbles upon a tiny clue, she begins to investigate further and discovers that Megan’s chilling ordeal might have actually occurred after all.

It is too bad that straight-to-DVD movies do not really get any consideration for Oscar awards because if they did one of the frontrunners would be this movie starring master thespian Steven Seagal. It is rumored that after this year’s Oscar Awards cerimony, a reporter asked Daniel Day-Lewis about what actors he most respected and he mentioned that no other actor had the effect on him as Mr. Seagal. He actually said that he based many of his performances in the past on Seagal roles and felt horrible that he had never given Mr. Seagal the true thanks and gratitude that he deserves. “There would not be a Christy Brown without the influence of Steven Seagal,” Lewis stated. “There would not be a Bill the Butcher or Daniel Plainview without Steven Seagal. Mr. Seagal, You do indeed drink my milkshake.” He then continued to drink and passed out a short time later.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Jean-Claude Van Damme refused to allow Daniel Day-Lewis’ comments to slide. “Everyone knows that he never learned anything from that hack Seagal,” Van Damme argued. “Steven Seagal is a sell out who never amounted to anything. If Jean-Claude had been cast in Executive Decision, he would have kicked all their butts and the movie would have ended in fifteen minutes. Seagal? He took a dive out the plane. Everyone knows I quit The Predator movie because if Jean-Claude were the Predator, Arnold would never have survived. They needed a monkey to make Arnold look good. Everyone knows that Day-Lewis based his entire character of Hawkeye on Jean-Claude and that he drinks my milkshake!” There are no extras on this DVD because Van Damme declared that none of his scenes were bad enough to be deleted. Touché, Mr. Van Damme. Touché.
