No shame here: Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of the 90s, and might be my favorite sci-fi action type movie ever. I have watched that film maybe a hundred times, and I shout and cheer every time – even when I’m not drunk.
That said, I haven’t seen Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, despite it having been written by Ed Neumeir and directed by FX legend Phil Tippett. It didn’t have any of the original characters – how hard is it to meet Casper Van Dien’s quote?!? – and I heard it sort of sucked. But I will be seeing the third film, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, which is being directed by Neumeir and stars Johnny Rico himself, back in the role that made him eligible to charge money for autographs at Comic Con.
The trailer for the movie premiered at Wonder Con last weekend (when did that convention become such a big deal? It looks like I’m going to have to haul ass to San Fran next year), and now it’s online. The whole thing sort of looks like a rehash of the first movie, but who’s going to complain about that? The film goes straight to DVD later this year.
