Almost no one could have guessed that the year’s best new drama would appear on a major network. Or that the network in question would be NBC of all places. Or that the series would be a prequel to a long-in-the-tooth novel and film series that had plenty worn out its welcome. But then we got Hannibal, Bryan Fuller’s re-imagining of Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter universe, and it was rightly loved by all who watched.
Unfortunately, all who watched didn’t amount to a very big number, so when NBC announced their fall schedule earlier this month, they still didn’t want to commit to renewing the series for a second season. You could almost already see its name there alongside Firefly and Freaks and Geeks as one of the better one-and-done series of all time. Mads Mikkelsen may have had his agent already putting feelers out.
But unlike with most of Lecter’s victims, this story has a happy ending. NBC has official renewed Hannibal for a 13-episode second season, which will air sometime next year and presumably get us closer to Will Graham’s fateful realization that this Lecter guy may not be all that he appears. Along the way, expect plenty of Hugh Dancy’s Graham looking jittery, disturbing dream sequences, even more disturbing dinner sequences and the most TV gore you’ll find this side of The Walking Dead. I figure that’s worth cracking open a Chianti for.
