Proving once again that selling out to the man definitely has its perks, Bungie has released a new trailer for their upcoming sci-fi shooter Destiny, and boy howdy does it look purty. With narration by Giancarlo Esposito (Gus from Breaking Bad) and directed by Jon Favreau (of Deep Impact and The Replacements fame), the trailer does an excellent job of setting up the fact that A: There will be robots and aliens in this game and B: You will shoot those robots and aliens. But don’t take my word for it:
While details are still fairly sketchy, we do know that Destiny will be a co-op sci-fi FPS with MMO elements, and will revolve around the last survivors of Earth waging war against alien invaders. However, in a stunning twist, there will also be an ancient alien force helping the humans, and at the risk of indulging in wild speculation, there may be some sort of prophecy involved. On one level it’s hard not to be excited by the prospect of Bungie being given carte blanche on a new title, and I have no doubt the final product will be a blast to play. At the same time however, there’s something grimly ironic about Bungie breaking free from Microsoft and the Halo tether so that they can sign on to Activison for ten years to make yet another “epic” sci-fi shooter. It’s like Michael Bay abandoning those pesky Transformer films so he can finally work on that big-budget Go-Bots adaptation he’s been dreaming of. I’ll take a good but clichéd game over no game any day, but I do hope that Bungie has something up their sleeve that will set Destiny apart from other games of its ilk.
