Whenever news of Pixar sequel hits, I often see or hear comments to the effect of, “they don’t even make a sequel to their best films, like The Incredibles!”
The fact that Pixar is actually balancing their original:sequel ratio pretty damn well for an arm of the Disney company, I don’t think it’s a mark against them that sequel projects are pretty much always filmmaker driven. This is why I’m pleased they’ve never forced a sequel to The Incredibles, as that needs to happen if and only if Brad Bird ever decides it’s time.
And apparently, one day soon, he might.
In perhaps the most substantial acknowledgement that a sequel is possible in many years, Brad Bird told THR that the idea has been kicking around in his head lately. This is not the usual bait and switch based around a vague, red-carpet, “maybe.” This sounds to me like a conscientious acknowledgement that it’s something he wants to do if things fall into place.
I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world. I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another [Incredibles] film, and if I can get ‘em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that.
He follows that up with a more general comment about wanting to accelerate his filmmaking pace and find ways to move projects along faster without compromising them. Good luck with that Mr. Bird.
Still, that moves The Incredibles 2 from, “maybe, probably not” to “possibly in the foreeable future,” which –paired with his assurance that it’s all based on good ideas— will be great news for fans of Pixar’s arguable family masterpiece.
