Day Eleven – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is one of the best movies ever made. The dawning of Dourif. An amazing collection of character actors. Nicholson at his finest. Louise Fletcher owning Nurse Ratchet to loathsome perfection. Will Sampson practicing shitty sink care and lovely euthanasia. Milos Forman being absolutely Milos. Depressing, life-affirming, hilarious, and staggeringly sad all at once. Kind of like a career as an internet film guy. The Polish have brought the world many things like Polish pants and Polish shoes but their finest export by far has been their movie posters, bizarre and oftentimes jaw-dropping interpretations of films from all over the world. Sometimes literal examinations of their source but sometimes absolutely batshit pieces of art that almost take on a life of their own. Over the next fifteen weekdays I’ll be sharing some of the best examples of how these creative necromancers interpret American cinema. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest features shock therapy, which explains the Polish poster’s decision to make a Christ parallel with Randall P. McMurtry but it is such a wacky thing to focus on. It’s the look on his face which blows the hardest. What’s Jack thinking?

“That feels peculiar in my ass.”

“Did I leave the bathroom light on?”

“Were there hammers in Christ’s time?”

“Rhea Perlman. Huh.”

What would this movie be like?

My Dinner with Andre. Vice Squad. Everybody’s All American.

Who is the audience for this film?

Joseph Cotton. Milos Forman. Marilyn Manson. Timothy Bottoms. Me.

What the fucking fuck is fucking fucking?

I get what they’re doing. It’s just the wrong choice.

Tagline vs. Tagline?

The wicked wit and anti-establishment vibe of the piece is perfectly captured in Jack’s expression. He’s obviously not thinking about Rhea Perlman.

What other movies could effectively use this poster?

Shock treatment. Shock Corridor. A Shock to the System. Enchanted.

Tomorrow: Seriously, there’d have been no sequels if this were the poster!
