a1_futurama_wallpaper-wideFor a while Futurama has been one of those shows that I don’t really keep up with, yet I somehow feel comforted knowing it’s out there and still going. Tossing on an epsisode as background noise occasionally, I’ve found the Comedy Central episodes amusing, if not heyday-level material.

Alas, my kind of apathetic appreciation is not the kind that keeps a show going, and word has emerged that Comedy Central has let the show go.

While there appears to be some effort to court a third home for the series, it’s as likely as not that Groening and company will be packing it up for good once the current 7th season ends on September 4th. There are 13 new episodes left, which will begin airing in June. Apparently the series currently ends with *spoiler alert* a wedding between Fry and Leela, with lots of death and time-travel. Satisfying and appropriate-enough, if that is indeed the ending…

“We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”

That’s Groening on the cancellation. David X. Cohen is also pretty zen about the whole thing…

“I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news. It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

If you’re one of those still passionate about Futurama, now would be the time to speak up. If you read more of the quotes at Entertainment Weekly you can get more of an idea what’s still left in the hopper and how confident each of the show’s principles are about finding a new home.
