Happy Thanksgiving, or as Canadians call it, Thursday.
THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR:
-We’ve got a movie from the Coen Brothers and a movie from Todd Haynes hitting theaters! Both are great, and both are worth seeing as soon as you can get to them.
-Los Angeles has a 70mm print of Lawrence of Arabia at the Egyptian this weekend.
The rest of the year promises a couple of films that might be worth something:
-Juno, the Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody film with Ellen Page and Michael Cera is supposedly a great little heartwarmer, and it opens 12/5.
-Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth (which is reported a bit nutty) comes out 12/14 and is worth a look, if only because of its director.
–Walk Hard should be a good laugh and comes out 12/21, along with Sweeney Todd. The latter is more of a question mark, but the material is perfect material for Tim Burton. That said, the same could be said of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
-The Christmas weekend brings There Will be Blood (which has already been certified a masterpiece by a number of the Chud staff) Charlie Wilson’s War (which was once a best picture front runner, though who’s to say today), Persepolis (which should be a best animated feature front runner), and the new Woody Allen Cassandra’s Dream.
-And then there’s Alvin and the Chipmunks.
-Hopefully the strike will weild something beautiful and fascinating, though without writer-based tinkering, I have my doubts, but I am hopeful.
-Bear Republic’s Racer 5 ale. God damn, that’s a good beer. Though I had Stone’s Double Bastard Arrogant Ale last night, and that wrecked me good and proper. Good stuff.
-Hot naked women. Because they’re hot naked women.
-The new Hearts of Darkness DVD, along with the Criterion collection putting out tons of great stuff, including Jean-Luc Godard’s Pierrot le Fou. And Warner Brothers is putting out Beaks favorite Payday in January.
PREDICTIONS ARE A HERO TO MOST, BUT THEY NEVER MEANT SHIT TO ME, STRAIGHT UP RACIST, SIMPLE AND PLAIN
Enchanted should rock the party. I wasn’t sure of the ad campaign, but the Disney moniker does still work, and that $8 million dollar opening is hot potatoes for sure.
The Mist, sadly, didn’t do as well – though it should get a Friday/Saturday bump (like Amy Winehouse). This Christmas also did well, so it should continue doing well, and Hitman will open well enough, though the $20 it gets to this weekend will still likely mean that it does $40 in total. Beowulf and kid friendly Bee Movie will also perform well.
So let’s do this for the five day:
1. Enchanted – $59.7 Million
2. This Christmas – $26.7 Million
3. Hitman – $20.5 Million
4. Beowulf – $27.6 Million
5. Bee Movie – $14.4 Million
And then there you go. We’ll see you Sunday. Or not. Do what you do. And if you don’t know, now you know.
