As if I needed another title with a number at the end.
The move is over. Monday, I started classes for the fall quarter of my Junior year at film school. I’ve been excited to blog about the going’s on at school for awhile, now I finally can.
I pondered writing an intro piece trying to examine the reasons why there is such a sense of enmity towards film students. I could point at jealousy towards those that are actually “going for it” but honestly, there is little more explanation necessary than the fact that most film students are ignorant cocks. It is an unfortunate fact that many of the people (even the ones I like) that I meet or work with at this school have no appreciation for history, have no objective taste, and don’t really understand the language of film. Even more sad, for every dumbass you encounter who considers Boondock Saints the best movie in the last 10 years, there are three who think There Will Be Blood is utterly trancendent- but couldn’t give you a real reason why*. I’ve always found idiocy much less annoying than someone who is right for the wrong reasons. I’m not trying to stand back with crossed arms and lament being surrounded by cretins- I don’t know shit about shit either. All I can do is make it my policy to educate myself everyday, and remain honest and trasparent about what I do or don’t know.
On the flip side though, and the reason why I don’t drown in film student self-loathing, is the amount of fucking talented amazing people that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’ve met true visionaries, incredibly talented visual artists, and exceedingly effective managers/supervisors in my time here and I’m only halfway through. I can’t speak for other schools, but if you are a decent judge of character and willing to look around, there’s good people to work with.
Secondly, I manage to not hate myself because the overall environment is pretty far from pretentious. The method and approach of this school is almost purely technical, and the school pride’s itself on it’s infrastructure of cutting-edge stuff. This makes me feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, since I’m not paying big bucks to have artistic circle-jerks with a bunch of assholes, but rather I’m paying to have access to every conceivable piece of equipment for free, as much as I want (within reason). The professors are pretty fucking rockin’ too.
I think I’ll be enjoying a pretty fun quarter between the Film Festival and three fascinating classes**. I hope to have plenty of interesting stories to share.
*Other than simply quoting it. No you don’t drink my milkshake, asshole.
** Post-Production, History of Film, Intermediate Sound Design! Good stuff.
