He’s only just now “about to read the script,” but apparently Ang Lee is all about Scott Rudin and company’s take on Cleopatra, which has long been set to star Angelina Jolie in a more mature tale about the Egyptian queen as a strategist and politician.
Speaking amidst the flurry of nominations and awards (including two major ones announced today) Ang Lee says the idea of directing the film…
“…just feels right to me after all the other types of films I’ve done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”
This is a film that has gone through directors like the Egyptians went through pharaohs, with names like Fincher and Greengrass attached at one point or another. The most recently discussed draft was written by Eric Roth, based on the biography by Stacy Schiff, but little news has leaked out since.
If there’s any time Lee could clinch such a gig, now is it. I have to imagine it’s his project if he wants it, and the excellent director would definitely be the kind of helmer that would seal my interest. Fingers crossed this works out…
