We’ve senn one oblique look at Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color since the Sundance line-up announcement, and now today we get another. This one is fixated on the relationship between Jeff (Carruth himself) and Kris (Amy Seimetz) that is the film’s center, with only the most vague allusions to whatever ill-advised quest or process or whatever it is that they embark on that, as the official synopsis promises, “gets shit poppin’.”
The pretty compositions, stark photography and generally dreamy, intimate tone drips from this trailer same as they did from the last, but the approach is decidedly different. Still this is working on that vague, troubling wavelength where a very personal story feels like it reflects much larger forces in humanity. I’m reminded of everything from the work of Darren Aronofsky, to Malick, to Paul Thomas Anderson with this one, yet all boiled down and expressed with Carruth’s very unique voice. It continues to make me anxious and uncomfortable and wholly intrigued all at once.
I’m as excited for this film that I know nothing about as much as I am for any movie to be released in 2013, so expect more as we get it.
