I was as surprised as anyone when Smiley Face, the Gregg Araki-directed stoner comedy, was moved from a mid-summer dumping ground to halfway prestigous slot at the Toronto Film Fest. I didn’t see it there, but word wasn’t bad; audiences thought it was funny, at least. Speaking only for myself, the presence of the rather hot and funny Anna Faris is enough to arouse, er, interest in the film.
The same factor should make Inferno, the film in which Faris would like to play Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace, the audience favorite of 2008…if it ever gets made. Faris is producing and aiming to work under first-time director Matthew Wilder. Not ‘work under’ like Lovelace used to work under people, just…oh, fuck it. Imagine whatever you like.
"There’s a project about Linda Lovelace, the porn star, that we’re really hoping to put together soon," she told MTV. "It’s a really deep, dark drama — and it would be cool for me to do."
Cue up the Louis Armstrong.
Though in actuality this will be less I Know What Boys Like (the Faris as Playboy Bunny pic) and more Wonderland, as the Lovelace story ain’t a pretty one. You mean there’s a seedy underbelly to porn?
Faris & Co. are hoping to get the pre-strike go code for the flick, which still has a lot of pre-production work to be done. Casting for Lovelace’s husband Chuck Traynor, the guy she claimed held a gun to her head to provide motivation during the more intense moments of Deep Throat, is a primary concern. Good news, Anna: I hear Jim Carrey is looking for work.
