Iconic underdog Rocky Balboa’s fights never seem to stop. Action Jackson, Hulk Hogan, Mr. T., Communism, brain trauma, old age, and now Broadway. 2013 will likely see the Broadway premiere of Rocky the Musical (also possibly titled Rocky the Musical: Fight From the Heart; though I really don’t get why bother calling it that when the first title says it all). Sylvester Stallone is a token co-producer on the production, which actually has a rather muscular pedigree behind it. The show has music by Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime), a book by Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan (Annie, Hairspray), and is directed by Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson‘s Alex Timbers. Playing the titular lovable lug is Drew Sarich, who (from my minimal research) is an American who has been splitting his stage time between New York and Germany, which likely explains why this current stage adaptation chose to go through the cumbersome task of translating itself into German and doing its test run in Hamburg as Rocky Das Musical…
Along with the original score, it seems that the production will also be including two famous songs from the Rocky franchise, the Oscar-nominated “Gonna Fly Now” (from Rocky) and “Eye of the Tiger” from (Rocky III). The play is expected to move to New York in 2013, though nothing is currently official. Check out some more video…
