Sidney Lumet’s last attempt at a "comeback" feature (Find Me Guilty) ended with Vin Diesel growing his hair out while tanking in glorious fashion at both the domestic and international box office. DVD sales fared even worse. Still, as the old adage goes, what better way to bounce back from the last comeback failure than by staging another?
And so it is with Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead. Sidney "The Legend" Lumet has struck again, leaving us with a dense post-production trailer for his upcoming angst-fest. The rated "R" by current MPAA standards look at the film laughs in the face of my personal pet peeve* as it fleshes out (both figuratively and Marisa Tomei-atively) the better part of the film’s first two acts. But oh how it delivers.
Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman and the fantastic Albert Finney inevitably learn working with family always ends in misery- especially when it involves trying to pull one over on Mom and Pop. The trailer gives the rest of the detail, which you can see in not-exactly-Quicktime quality here.
Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead hits France in September, waiting for a US release until a late 2007 awards season push.
